ARTIST’S TALK: Saturday 31 October, 11am Bookings
Messums Yorkshire is hosting Northumberland artist Charles Poulsen’s first drawings exhibition in Yorkshire in its new gallery in James Street, Harrogate. The Charles Poulsen exhibition will run alongside a show of works by internationally acclaimed American glass artist Dante Marioni. Both exhibitions illustrate Messums commitment to showcasing the best of contemporary art and craft in its galleries.
Charles Poulsen’s large-scale three-dimensional drawings are realised in layers of pencil, wax and gouache to create striking abstractions that capture the energy of drawing as a primary means of expression. As Messums’ continues to champion the finest exponents of the handmade working across medium, we are delighted to present a series of Poulsen’s abstracted drawings at Messums Yorkshire gallery this Autumn.
“The drawings start with a square sheet of paper and a drawn square frame within. The square is chosen for its stability, calmness and because there is not the same association with landscape or the portrait of a rectangle.” At five feet squared, the works seem to capture invisible energies and internal organic forces of growth and are a celebration of the immediacy and directness of drawing.
